How do you know when it’s time for a new water heater? If your hot water doesn’t seem as hot as it once did, or if it is taking longer for your water to heat up after the supply has been depleted (by showers, running the dishwasher, etc.), it may be time to buy a new one. If your tank is leaking, there is no “fix” you can do yourself, so it’s time to start searching the water heaters available today.
Before you run out and buy a heater that is just like your old one, take these factors in to consideration:
- You may need a larger heater, especially if your family has grown. A larger family means more hot water usage. You might also consider a larger heater if the one you had before ran out of hot water too quickly. For instance, if your previous water heater didn’t hold enough hot water for two showers or you couldn’t bathe while the dishwasher ran due to a lack of hot water, you may want a larger capacity heater.
- Storage water heaters are typically used by those who use electricity or natural gas to heat the water. This type of heater holds or “stores” heated water until it’s requested.
- For many people, energy usage is a concern due to high costs. The “storage” type water heaters frequently used by home owners consumes as much as 15 percent of your home’s total energy costs each month, which is substantial. Tankless water heaters are energy efficient because they heat water as it is delivered instead of storing it for hours at a time at a high temperature.
Consider your options, your needs and your energy costs before buying a new water heater.
