Questions To Ask When Choosing A New Water Heater

A water heater is one of those items in our homes that we forget about…until something goes wrong. Ideally, we’d all like to take time to research models and select the best water heater for our homes. But if you’re in a hurry or you don’t know much about water heaters to begin with, we’ve got a few questions you should ask to help make an educated decision:

  • For my family size and typical water usage, what volume tank do I need?
  • Will the water heater be self-cleaning, or do I have to drain it periodically or do other preventive maintenance?
  • Which models are the most energy efficient?
  • Is tankless a good option for my home, and what would it take to install such a system?
  • What choice do I have as to the type of lining inside the heater, which will come in contact with the water my family uses?

A good technician can answer these questions for you. Make sure you are dealing with a trusted, local company.  For example, if you just receive an estimate, but no choice over what kind of new water heaters are available as replacements, you should ask whether there are, in fact, any decisions to make regarding the replacement heater.  A competent plumber, working for a well-known, established company, should take the time to answer your questions and give you some good advice to help you make the right decision for yourself and your family.
